Carving Branches or Small Logs - How To Hold Down

Hi
Anybody have an idea How To Hold Down for Carving Branches or Small Logs ?
These are About 2 to 3 inch logs on which I am going to carve a flat, then a name.
Please advise,

Use a v slot. Put limb into the v slot and clamp down

alternatively, you can nail a board to it in specific spot (that you won’t be cutting), or using some of those millable plastic/composite brad nails. Seen it done for large pieces being resawed.
