Carving the Hello Internet Nail and Gears

Things are getting nerdy in the shop as I take the official flag of the Hello Internet podcast and turn it into a classy framed wall plaque.

Recently, on the podcast, they held a referendum to select an official flag of the podcast. (and yes I know that sounds kind of bizarre to an outsider… Just go listen.) To cut a long story short, I thought it would be fun to make a carved plaque of the winning design. This would allow me to combine woodworking with CNC carving and also with general science nerdiness. What’s not to like?

I’m using two-colour black-and-white HDPE for the plaque and carving it on my X-Carve from Inventables. The two-colour plastic is very cool to carve, as the carved image shows up as white (the interior colour) while the surface is black.

That gives us a nice basic carving. But like Brady on the podcast, we are never satisfied with the base model. We want the Pro version!

So I next take some reclaimed hardwood and turn it into some classy frame stock, which I use to frame the plaque. The end result is gorgeous and ready to be displayed with pride.

There is a contingency out there that would probably pay to have one of these of Flaggy Flag.
