Color filling a v-carve

What if you want to stain the wood? I’m thinking:

  1. Stain
  2. Carve
  3. Seal
  4. Fill carve with spray paint
  5. Swipe off extra paint ASAP.

you guys think that would work?

I’ve tried that before on a another project and I wound up sanding off the seal coat in order to get the over spray off. I know 3m makes a paint mask that is supposed to work well but the cost of it has kept me from buying it.
