Cut down rails

I am looking to buy a 1000x1000 machine and need to cut the rails down to give me a 1000 wide x 650 deep. Is this doable or do I have to purchase different parts? I need a smaller machine for space reasons but don’t want to go with the 750 model. Can I just cut down the rails and re tap them?

I think that certainly is doable. Those of us that bought Shapeoko2 machines had to tap the narrower extrusion for the x rails. I’ve thought about making my x carve narrower too. Mine is 750 x 1000 now.

I’m not sure how much tapping you have done, but I would HIGHLY recommend Tap Magic when tapping aluminum.
