Cutting thru material

Just bought a newly used X carve and was wondering if anyone can tell me the best way to get a cut thru on the material without gusting the waste board? do you put 1/8" spacers under the material or is there some other way? What are the short and tall base wedges used for as well as the boosters? Thanks

1/8" spacers are one way, another is using a skim cut wasteboard and find Z reference off the wasteboard itself. Zeroing off the top of the material to be carved is not precise as the material rarely is exact stated thickness or uniform in thickness.

I have some MDF on top of my wasteboard.

The wedges go with the clamps. Pictures here.
