Dual side carving

how do i carve both sides of a crib board lid,i have the bottom with the 2 locator pins entered but now how do i enter the other side

I would create two files, one for the top, one for the bottom. I’d strike a centerline down the material on both sides. Then with a pointed tool, I’d line the bit up with the bottom at the centerline. You could clamp a fence down to help with alignment on both sides too. Run one side, flip, reset the zero’s again… Run the second side. That’s how I do guitar bodies and necks.

thanks

how do you make easel use tabs set at the center of the carve rather than the bottom? Tried to do the flip over and align but the first pass cut the tabs and the part was ruined.

You can set the height of the tabs. So you can make the tabs thicker on the first side, then make the cut not all-the-way through on the second side.

But I’m not really sure this is the right solution. Instead, don’t cut the outer perimeter on the first side at all. Just skip that step, and only cut it on the second side.

There is no “Tab Height Selection” all the “Tab Edit” Button does is allow you to move the Tabs but won’t let you adjust the tab height. This was the first solution tried during the original file creation but when doing 3d model cut it only lets you adjust location not tab height.

Oh, sorry, I didn’t realize this was for 3D carving; I don’t think the original question was about 3D carving.

In that case, I wouldn’t set the height of your material to the final height. Instead, set it to the minimum height necessary to cover the features. If you do the same on both sides, it won’t cut all the way through. This depends highly on the model, of course—not all models will work this way.

It’s also possible to add tabs to the 3D model itself, but you’d have to do it in an external program instead of Easel.

(Future tip for the forums: it’s probably better to start a new thread than tack onto an existing one to avoid confusion.)
