We have released a new version of the Easel Driver version 0.4.4. Driver is available immediately to be downloaded for Windows, macOS and Ubuntu Linux at Easel - Downloads. You will be prompted to upgrade next time you carve.
Release notes:
Updated list of allowed domains to connect
Improvements to the driver bundle size making it smaller
This release is only available to be installed on Windows 10 and newer. We strongly encourage our users to upgrade to Windows 11 at your earliest convenience. Windows 10 will be unsupported starting October 14, 2025.
Grrrrreat… You just effectively bricked my Xcarve, since I’ve been running it with my raspberry pi 4, which is ARM64 architecture and the Linux drivers are for AMD64, now. Why are these new drivers -required-? I use this thing for my business every day and I can’t use it,. now, unless I go out and spend hundreds of dollars on a laptop.
I understand no longer offering support for older machines, but WHY do y’all need to make it so we can’t use -current- drivers? Is there some kind of compatibility issue that you’ve introduced somehow?
Hello @PhilipMccorkle1,
Any system that is not covered by the official Easel System Requirements falls outside what we can provide support for. The Easel Driver has not officially supported other architectures such as Raspberry Pi.
Every driver released comes with changes outlined in the Updates section of our forum. For a variety of reasons we have to keep the driver current and need to update it regularly. At times we have to discontinue support for older versions in order to keep the application evolving.
We strongly advise pairing the machine and Easel with a computer that meets the system requirements and is up to date on security patches, especially if used in a business context.
SO ) Will Easel NO LONGER WORK on a Windows 10 or older computer after October?
OR Will it Just “Not Be Supported”?
Please Advise,
Thank You.
Martin Gutzmer
Hello @MartinGutzmer,
It will not be officially supported. We do expect the driver to still work on Windows 10 machines after October. We can’t guarantee the driver working though with Microsoft discontinuing support for that version of the OS.
I understand you can’t provide future support. That’s totally fine. What I don’t understand is why you can’t just allow older versions to stay in place. I don’t care about “security updates”, etc. I just easel to stay exactly how it is, currently. The way the driver interacts with the OS and X-Carve isn’t changing, so why can’t we just use the same driver?
I actually got the old driver to work, but it’s a pain to do each time y’all update the software. The fact that I got it to work without significant changes means you didn’t actually change anything that would render the old driver obsolete, except in version number only.
So, how about change the code for easel to give a warning, saying the driver is out of date and updating it is suggested, rather than just locking us out of the ability to use the product we paid a lot of money for?
There are a various reasons why we might have to stop supporting older versions. We only do this when we have to. In this case there is an update coming in the future that will prevent Easel from being able to connect to older drivers.
My Lenova Ideapad is now a brick. No where did i see that AMD is not supported. And I have used it for over 2 years.
I also dont like that fact i HAVE to be on the internet for Easel to work. I have been a customer for quite a few years and this is just wrong.
There are alternatives to Easel like OpenBuildsControl and it is completely offline. I already have licensed Vectrix . I just always found it easier with Easel. Well you are forcing my hand to use other software to do what I need.
Hello @Adam6 ,
AMD processors are still supported as long as you laptop meets or exceeds the System Requirements. If you are having issues connecting please reach out to our Customer Success team by following the links on easel.com.
Here’s an idea… Freeze Easel as it is and make it a “legacy” version. Continue working on Easel, updating drivers, whatever, but -leave this version alone-, so that it continues working on older machines. I’m an engineer that primarily does programming of embedded systems, so I understand how this kind of stuff works. I can’t think of a single reason you would be “forced” to change things like this that doesn’t come down to just laziness.
And I 100% agree with Adam6. This is just nonsense. Focus on fixing -major- bugs, first, like this enraging bug that causes the machine to randomly freeze up in the exact same spot on a job, requiring not only a restart of the job, but the machine, itself. Focus on THAT kind of thing, rather than security issues, as if the machine holds the nuclear launch codes.
We want to make sure it’s clear that this driver update will not do anything to change support for someone using a Lenovo Ideapad or AMD processors on supported platforms.
If anyone is having problems with an X-Carve machine freezing during a carve, we encourage you to contact help@inventables.com as this is an issue our support team can help you resolve.
