I do have homing switches. So leave it set to $22=1?

Yes it is correct then. So the reason you were locked is that you must have power down the controller and then when you powered it back up it locked in hopes that you would home the machine before using it.

Here is a great page that describes all the configuration options/switches in GRBL

ok when I hit $H the Z axis goes about 3/4 of the way up and stops but the motor stays engaged

The first thing the homing cycle does is move the Z axis up till it contacts the Z homing switch then it will move the X and Y together in the positive direction till they hit their homing switches.

Is your Z stopping when it touches the switch?

No its about a half inch away from the switch and it stops and the z motor just makes like a grinding sound. But if I do a homing sequence in Easel it homes just fine.

That sounds like a mechanical problem on the Z axis, but it is odd that it would work in Easel. Have you tried it just now in Easel?

I would also try turning the Z axis lead screw by hand (with all power off) and see if it get difficult to turn where it is stopping. You may need to adjust the eccentric nuts.

Ok got it. I had a eccentric nut a little to tight.
