How do I recess a shape and fully cutout another share within the recessed shape

It seems that Easel wants to recess the entire shape including the shape that is being completely cut out. The simulation shows like a 6 hour carve. I’m recessing the grey outside the inner shape, cutting out the inner shape entirely. Thanks

Set the inside shape to ZERO depth, then select both objects and go to edit then combine.

Well, that didn’t go as expected. What happened? Grey area set to depth of .26, it went deeper. All other cuts are all the way through. Not sure why it went deeper and why it completely went off the rails with everything else inside the inner shape.
