Jtec Laser

not sure if it is necessary but I put a space between the M3 and the Sxxx code. like this M3 S012. I use UGS and a Raspberry Pi 3 when I do laser work on the X-Carve. can you send pics of how you have the system wired at the controller and the wires on the laser driver board. that way we might see something that is wrong there.

I hope these are okay, the other wires connected to the X controller yellow and black are from a relay I have for the spindle, and yes I tried with a space between the commands

Your post is a little bit confusing.

Let’s start with one thing and then move to the next.

What is the response that you got when you tried to flash 1.0c into the X-controller? Status line is at the bottom of the Xloader window.

Inputs should be:

E:\Xcarve_JTech_grbl_9_1_2017.hex
Uno/ATmega328
COM3
115200

Just make sure that you don’t have power turned on - on the spindle and laser at the same time.

Larry I have tried to flash 1.0c again with the exact inputs you gave above and it comes back with upload failed, I did take great care to make sure I typed it right

Are you sure your X-controller is on COM3?

Maybe you have a bad board. Can you flash any grbl version into the X-controller?

Yes,everything is working fine on COM3, I have not tried flashing any other version, Jeff from Picsender e-mailed and wanted to know if I had UGS connected to COM3 while I was flashing with Xloader, and that I should not have both connected at the same time, I am away from the workshop now, it’s 6-50pm here so I will try again Tomorrow

Yes, that might be it. You can only have one program hooked to COM3 at a time.

On your next try have all programs shutdown and try Xloader again.

I have tried that, shut down all programs and it is still not uploading, (upload failed) I also unplugged the USB cable and left it for a while then plugged in again,
I have tried uploading the 2016 version and it’s the same upload failed, I don’t know what to try next

@PatrickDunne

What OS are you using?

Windows 10

Call Inventables. It appears that you have problems with your system board.

I can’t think of anything else that would prevent a firmware upload.

Thank you for helping me Larry, I have e-mailed Inventables explaining the problem, I will let you know the outcome

I sent an e-mail to JTech to see if they could help and Jay replied, he told me to try the command G1 F4000 M03 S11 and that worked great, I changed the S11 to S12 to make it easier to see and it works fine, I will probably get a reply from Inventables next week about the system board, but I think I can stay with version 1.1f for now as it is working okay, thank you all for your help

Just keep in mind that the laser can turn on unexpectedly with 1.1f.

Always have your safety glasses on if power is connected to the laser even if you have the laser turned off.

Yes, I will always have the safety glasses on, I am looking around at the moment at adding a second layer of protection, it is worrying that the laser can turn on unexpectedly, I will wait to hear what Inventables have to say about the system board, and if it needs to be replaced, then I might load your version 1.0c as Safety is my main concern

Larry, this is the reply I got from Inventables, will your version be on here, there is a 1.0c version by Paul Kaplan, should I try loading that, as they want the error report

Got it, have you tried re-loading an invetables fork onto the board using the IDE? https://inventables.desk.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2058884-how-do-i-re-flash-grbl-to-my-x-controller-arduino- The error report there will give us a better idea of what could be going wrong. I suspect that it might be a bootloader issue of some sort. Please keep us posted. Best, -Griffin.

Go ahead and load in their version using their method so they can get the information they need. It shouldn’t make any difference, but If you do it their way and it fails then they would have to fix it.

Once you can get firmware to load we can put my version on.

I too, think it’s a bootloader issue, and that their method will fail also.

Thank’s Larry, I will try loading their version and see what happens

Larry I tried loading their version and that also failed, so they suggested a remote troubleshooting session, we done that Yesterday, the first attempt at loading your version with Xloader said (uploading) but it froze and would not upload, so he left it for 10 minutes to see if it would upload, but it did not, so he tried again and got me to unplug the USB cable and plug it in again while it was uploading, and that worked, I had tried all this, and kept getting upload failed, your version is on there now so that is all I wanted, I asked him what the problem was and this was his reply

To be honest I’m not sure. My best guess would be that your operating system was marking the COM3 port as ‘in use’ since the upload worked after we unplugged and plugged in the USB connection. I suppose a connection problem would describe it best. It seemed like the bootloader was all intact.
