Minimum carve depth?

I’m looking to engrave some elaborate lettering in a cutting board, and want to make the carve as shallow as possible in order to not interfere with cutting and cleaning. What is the minimum carve depth you’d recommend such that the letters are still clearly visible? I’m planning to use a 90º v bit, for what it’s worth.

I’ll run some tests based on the advice on this forum.

well, the best practice is to do an inlay, using multiple, contrasting colors… It is more work, but they can have a really beautiful look at the end…

Wow I do love that idea!
