Painting vcarved signs

I am trying to do a 2 stage paint on carved signs. I want the carved out letters one color and the base of the sign a different one. I painted the work piece one color then applied a layer of painter’s tape over it before I started the carve. The thought being that after the letters were carved, I could spray them the second color, remove the tape and voila, perfect 2 color paint. Using a 1/16th upcut bit for the letters but it tore up the tape so I wouldn’t be able to get crisp sharp paint in the letters. Any suggestions?

I run my detail pass first, the Amana V-bits cut the Oramsk or tape very clean, then I come back in and run the roughing pass. What got you was the up-cut bit.

Thanks. I will try that.
