Sneak Peek at the X-Controller

Just include some new labels to stick over the upside-down portions.

I would be ok with that!

Looks good to me but what is up with the clear hose going to the spindle? Air cooling?

My X-Carve is ordered and I’m sure I wont be needing the power available in this controller but the question does come up… Will this be an option for the X-carve purchases in the near future or at the very least an economical upgrade?

I was wondering when someone was going to notice that. That is a water cooled spindle. It is 800W (1.06 hp), 3 phase and 24,000 rpm. It is virtually silent when running (but not cutting). It sort of fits the new Dewalt mount. I put two wraps of hard styrene around it.

We have Beer and Making events in our shop and we needed something super quiet, so the Making does not interrupt the Beer(ing).

I vote for the addition of Type I from that list for us in AUS/NZ.

the UK would be great also that’s type G on the list

To be honest it might be easier to sell some type of universal 220 socket and 4 plugs (with option to buy more) so people can add them to there own equipment. Seen it done before on old hi fi stuff, even pc used to power monitors via a non standard socket, that worked in many regions.

Looks great! It’s good to see that the poll chose to have it use those connectors too. :+1:

Is there any way to sign up to be notified (email?) when these become available?

BTW: There is also a currently unused internal connector in case we want to add some simple control buttons or a pendant in the future.

The aluminum X-Controller chassis samples came in! Nice, strong and heavy :sunglasses: The “final” prototype PCB is out for fabrication.

Kinda late in the proto phase but it would be nice if the chassis could be assembled to have the mounting lugs on either the top or the bottom ofr above and under table mounting configurations.

Yes!! This would be great! I’m planning on building a pendant for my X-Carve once it gets here. My plan is to basically make a custom bluetooth keyboard that’s sends the keyboard shortcuts to Universal G-Code sender and hopefully I can configure it to send keyboard shortcuts to Easel, that is if Easel has keyboard shortcuts for machine movement.

So…Am I now waiting again, for new controller before I order?

Hi,

Type E for us in France.
I would be interrested in…

Hi,
type E and F are usually done on the same plug…

Bart, would you recommend the water cooled spindle to work with the x-controller?

The controller really has no impact on that decision. If you are going for the ultimate setup and are not intimidated with things this complex…go for it.

I have heard very good things about the air cooled versions of those spindles too, but I have not seen one. They are nearly as quiet and a lot simpler to hook up.

The smaller VFDs for the 0.8kW and maybe the 1.5kW are available in 220V and 110V (harder to find). Get the one right for your available AC mains.

Keep in mind, Inventables does not sell any of these parts and support will be pretty much limited to forum.

How far off is the X Controller ? My cnc router has blown its old controller and rather than build one from scratch I am pretty keen to refit it with one of the X Controllers. The router is a HIGH Z S-1000.

Many thanks

I have been checking on the website to see if this is available yet. Original announcement said in about 6 weeks so i have been checking weekly. I am holding off on finishing a couple of builds to see if I can use this. Is there any ETA ?

Thank you.

Here is a little status update on the X-Controller.

We built several of them and have been testing them extensively. They are running great and have survived some serious abuse. We had a final design review and only made one change. It is no longer going to directly output to the 24VDC spindle. We did this because the 24V spindle is an entry level spindle and we are targeting this at more advanced machines.

Instead, the X-controller has a configurable control output for several types of spindles. It can output 0-5VDC PWM for DC spindles or it can output 0-10VDC analog voltage for VFD type (water cooled) spindles. It can also turn on/off AC spindles if you have an external relay. We will have some relay options.

We started a 30 piece pilot production run about 2-3 weeks ago. This will shake down the production PCB assembly and testing process. We will probably deploy most of these into the field to some power users to test.

If all goes well we will then order a lot of them to sell. We have ordered production quantities of the mechanical parts already. We will have a product page setup soon where you can signup to be notified when you can order them.

I don’t have an estimated date yet. This has a lower priority than X-Carve or Carvey so it is hard to make commitments for it.

Thanks @BartDring. That controller will move the X-Carve up from a kit-class/look machine to a professional look when available. IMO you should up its priority. I know I want one.
