Spiral Upcut Bits - Cheap

I’ve bought a lot of bits from MLCS over the last few years, to include these HSS spiral bits.

There are three sizes that will fit in a 1/4" collet (1/8, 3/16, 1/4). They are very sharp and less prone to breaking than carbide is. If you’re looking for a few general purpose bits they’re a good deal at under $5 each.

How does a flat bottom bit handle the initial plunge cut?

Quite nicely. These are 2-flute bits. The flutes meet at the bottom in a straight line, so it is capable of plunging. I first bought them to use for cutting mortises. They don’t have that dead space right in the middle that you find on the 4-flute bits.
