Tech in Chicago Podcast

I was recently interviewed by the Tech in Chicago Podcast. Here’s a link to it:

The interview took place in a middle school maker lab. It’s pretty cool to see students getting started with 3D carving at such an early age.

Is anyone else aware of school maker labs in your community?

We are working hard on the Mosaic Tile Project in my lab near Cleveland. I’ve been able to tie some city pride to our use of Easel and Carvey. Attached is just one of our great tiles so far and I can’t wait for the rest to go through Carvey.

In our area near and west of Cleveland, more and more spaces are popping up with an emphasis on making, but also integrating some core STEAM concepts and cross curricular integration. Our Mosaic Tile Project crosses history/geography/culture of Cleveland with the use of Easel and Carvey.

That’s interesting. Does it tie together with a history curriculum?

This project can tie back to Ohio 8th grade and HS American History standards. I didn’t necessarily put a focus on that for this project as much as used the history (pride, historical importance, etc.) as a framework to assist in the design and execution.

In reality if we wanted to, we could tie this project to Ohio History which is a 4th grade course/standard. Part of the inspiration of this project came from a Ohio History quilt project that some of our teachers used to do.

That’s cool. Please post the final project when you are done. It’s inspiring to see how teachers have integrated Carvey and 3D carving into existing curriculum.
