Actually, I think the phone-number comparison is way off target. It's more like asking a professional stenographer to take a letter for you. Shorthand is a task you can't perform for yourself, and you are asking a professional who usually gets paid for performing it, to do it for free.
So you know where I'm coming from, I used to work in the IT industry, and I'm sick and tired of people who expect me to diagnose and solve their computer woes for them, at a party, picnic, BBQ, beach, or over the phone on a Sunday morning, with no hint of willingness to pay me any sort of professional fee. I could spot them instantly. The phone rings:
"Hi, Angus, it's Fred!"
"Hi, Fred! I haven't heard from you in 25 years, and suddenly you're calling! So, what exactly is wrong with the computer?"
"Gee, don't be like that!"
"What, you're telling me you don't have a sick computer you want fixed, immediately, over the phone, for free?"
