Wasteboard hell

@MikeByrne Try looking for T-Track. I know Rockler and Incra sell it but any reasonable size woodworking site should stock it.

@MikeByrne hopefully we got you on a stairway out of hell?

We sell 24" tracks but you might want longer since you have the 1000mm X-Carve.

I designed a 3D printable jig for use with a plunge router and a 3/4" guide collar to cut the edge slots. If you have access to one you can download the model for the jig here

the easiest way to fasten material is with hot glue, line it up and squeeze a spot or two on three of the sidesā€¦let it cool for a minute and your ready to go.

Thanks again for the suggestions, I did a bit more work on it this afternoon and now have everything screwed together nicely and waiting for the electronics step!

@HelgeDokken I agree, Iā€™ve not used the hot melt glue for a while but I love double sided tape. Sticks well, also allows me to cut through the work by 1mm without cutting into the wasteboard or having to set up tabs etc.

  • Double sided tape
  • Hot melt glue
  • T Slot clamping
  • Threaded insert clampingā€¦
All I need is a vacuum table (actually, no I donā€™t)

Iā€™ve been looking around the local hardware stores and could not find double sided tape that adds any reasonable Z height under the material.

Only one I could get hold of is really thin and a nightmare to get off after use. Got a brand name within sight?

I can not recommend hot glue enough,so quick and easy.
But it is the only ā€œclampingā€ method i have tried on the x carve,so i have nothing to compare it against.
But David Westley had a good point in using tape, and that is the raised hight so you can go trough material without damaging the wasteboard.
And also the no need for tabs,I might have to try tape ā€¦but then again why is it called wasteboard :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Wasteboard that cost a fortune that isā€¦

I think you will get a job making a couple new ones for me next year, Helge. Yoursā€™ is big enough to carve out wasteboards for my 500mm machine. If you can bother - ofcourse.

Not sure of the brand, but living in Aus itā€™s probably some dodgy brand anyway. Often itā€™s sold as something for mounting mirrors. Hardware chain near me sells it in rolls. Quite spongy and approx ā…›" thick.
Can be a pain to remove, but with practice itā€™s not too bad

No problemo my friend  Let me know when you need it and I will go get some MDF sheets

here are three that i have been testing. all have had sucess. avery has the lightest hold but still works well with mdf in my test. the other two have a pretty strong hold and the parts arent going anywhere.

Iā€™m interested in your dust shield setup. How did you do it? Materials? Supply sources? Dimensions, etc.?

I just received a flyer in the mail from Rockler. This kit goes on sale 1/2/2016 for $19.99.

I will be stocking up next week.

I bought two tables from IKEA for my x-carve with the same exact wood surface as your 200$ table, each table was 40$ a piece, with 10$ shipping a piece for a total of 100$ā€¦ they are each 27"x44", so putting them next to eachother gave me a 54"x44" table for a hundred bux. The legs on there are pretty sturdy too, and I plan on bracketing them into the wall studs on the bottom (somehow), and then also to eachother to ensure a solid surface that doesnā€™t wobble when the machine rapids around. Thanks for sharing!

@DavidWestley. I am gearing up to upgrade my 500mm machine to a 1000mm machine and I like your use of T-Track. Can you tell me how many pieces of track you used? I see two on either side of the middle brace, and one each on either side of those (with the MDF in the middle)ā€¦ So I am counting up to 4 now. But, are there two more on the outside edges too? For a total of 6? How did you determine your spacing? The reach of your hold down clamps?

Thanks,
Jim

@JimFoster I used 6 because I had 6ā€¦ The two centre rails are actually almost next to each other, only separated by they middle brace of the machineā€™s frame.

@DavidWestley. Thanks for the info. By the way, how thick is your MDF? I will probably use 3/4", which appears to be thicker than what you are using, but I donā€™t perceive that as an issue and should give me more room to surface the boards down.

Thanks,
Jim
