Poplar is the wood I have the most immediate access to. It is oft touted as “The softest of the hardwoods.” I was wondering if “Soft Maple” would be the closest equivalent in EASEL Pro?
Thanks in advance for any advice on this!

That’s what I would do.
I wood too
I like poplar it works good and i love the color you can see in it.
At the risk of getting off topic - try using a dye cut with denatured alcohol on poplar (I use TransTint liquid dye) as the first finish layer - it makes the softer wood between the rings take on a deep, flaky shine. I think the reflected light looks similar to the edge of a broken piece of muscovite. The effect lasts if you seal it with a shellac, wax or poly coating.
That’s what I would do as well
