@CaseyH try to raise your bit up some before you start the probe. Since you have soft limits enabled ($20=1), the probe routine might be trying to command the bit to go outside of the allowable range.
I had this problem before and it took me days to figure out, but this board, including @LarryM, does a great job of helping people out.
