3D carving cutting air

I’m new to the 3D carving world and I need help :face_with_diagonal_mouth: I have downloaded different STL files and now I’m ready to get started. I’m starting with a simple skull first. I did the roughing now it’s doing the finishing but it’s cutting air. Is this normal? Does it go over as air first then back over actually moving onto the material? It looks like it’s moving over the material that was removed instead of just going straight to the remaining material to finish. Perhaps I’m saying this all wrong but if anyone could help me please:pray:t4:

Hi Michelle, what model CNC do you have? and if it’s the X-Carve does it have the newer Z axis with the linear rails?

Additionally, you did set Z zero to the same exact height that the roughing bit was set to, correct?

yes I had did that. I figured out the problem my router on z axis was too high for some reason so I adjusted it to the wasteboard and redid the whole thing and it worked beautifully. Thank you for your help though.
