how can I get the image I want into easel? is there a way to get around the clipping mask ? Anyone familiar with AI?

I use Illustrator. My usual workflow for a raster image in illustrator is: Image trace, ungroup the vectors, manually clean up the vectors to remove duplicates and fix intersections, export to dxf. At this point you can import the dxf file into easel.
Provide more detail on what you are trying to accomplish and I might be able to give a better answer.
