I am interested in getting an X-Carve but want to run it with a Gecko g540 controller and Mach 3. Has anyone had experience using this system instead of Easel and the Arduino controller.

Many of us have. Just search Gecko in the search bar and you will see tons of useful information. I upgraded to Gecko from a generic breakout board and stepper drivers. I have no idea how it works but MAN it is smooth, fast and at 48 volts - POWERFUL. Be advised, if you get a 48 volt supply, check its voltage before hooking it up. Many supply way more than 48 volts and you need to turn the little pot down to a figure safely under 48.
