You should check your grbl parameters to make sure that you have the right version of grbl if you downloaded it from the wiki page.
Inventables has their own fork of the project. The main difference for the X-carve is the parameters that get loaded into grbl for the X-carve.
You can check these settings in the Machine Inspector in Easel.
Ok, maybe over asking , but measurements and directions are off in initial jog . Do I follow configure to fix this?
Yes, use Easel to configure your board settings.
Even after g20 and $13=1 still in mm , not inches
If you are using easel, I believe you need to save or reset after making a change…I don’t use easel, so I am not sure.
