$1 is the Step Idle Delay. As stated below, setting $1 to 255 forces GRBL send full current to the stepper motors when they are in an idle state (i.e. not moving). This prevents any unwanted movement, and in my opinion, should be the default setting on any GRBL controlled device.
So setting $1 to 255 will hold the motors locked anytime the machine is powered on, I bet its not locked after the probing is sequence and was just dropping back down a little??
Setting that to 255 is a first step on my machines, as it holds locked for multi bit carves I’m not sure why its not set to that as default.
