I am trying to combine a circle with a box so I can cut it on the shape of the outside path only but unable to accomplish this task, the combine feature does absolutely nothing. I know there is a tutorial on this somewhere but cannot find it, any help appreciated it.

Is that a box(complete rectangle) or just 3 lines?
If its a box then you can select the circle and the rectangle shape and then Edit>Combine. Then set it to outside the path
