I’m trying to combine two shapes:
When I hit combine, it removes the arch and just leaves the rectangle.
Any suggestions?
I can get it to work in the opposite direction just fine (this is not what I want though).

Try using the “Better Booleans” app by clicking the lego brick icon in the toolbox. It gives you more control, and you should get the result you want.
However, if you want to use the Combine tool, the trick is to temporarily switch each shape to “Clear out a Pocket”, and make the rectangle black (full depth) and the semi-circle white (0 depth). This should subtract the white shape from the black shape.
After combining, you can go back to cutting the perimeter.
Sometimes the app is quicker, sometimes Combine is quicker.
