Copper Carving

I’m carving copper name plates. Do I need a coolant when carving? If so, what type?
Thanks!

I have successfully carved copper plate dry with no issues.

Here is a 6"x12" plate that I carved, filled with acrylic paint (made to look rough), and sprayed with clear acrylic. It’s the sound wave for the song “The One” by Kodaline made for my wife as our anniversary gift last year.

Funny thing…she had a copper plaque made with one of our wedding photos and the lyrics to the song, so they are both hanging next to one another now.

It’s similar to aluminum, so if you are using an endmill, a good single o-flute coated bit will do well. If using a v-bit, just make sure it is a true point v-bit to get crisp corners.
