Create Project from a Photo

New user here. I would like to create a 3D carve of a scanned photograph and I don’t really know where to start.

Help

You could try this…

It really depends on what you are trying to do. Some people use CNCs to make Lithophanes. A piece of plastic (often PVC) is cut away from behind so that light areas in the photo become thin areas on the back of the plastic. When you shine a light from behind, it reproduces the photograph in the plastic.

Other folks just want to get the outline of something. For example you could place a wrench on a copier/scanner and get an image that you could then trace into a tool path so that you could cut a custom recess that would exactly fit the wrench.

Making complex 3D models from many camera images is called photogrammetry, and there are many software packages that do this. However, this is an advanced activity which you will probably have to work your way up to.
