Drawer behind door option

Description of the requested feature:

  • …Allow for a cabinet design to have drawers behind doors.

What need or problem does this address?

  • …This feature is basically standard in modern kitchens, and unless it exists in cabinetmaker I cannot find it, one is forced to make the cabinet as two separate cabinets and then do a lot of deletion…

What area(s) of your workflow would this feature affect?

  • from design to cutout…

What impact or value would this feature bring to you and other cabinetmakers?

  • …as mentioned, one would be hardpressed to walk into a modern kitchen and not find drawers nestled behind cabinet doors. Shelves behind doors are still standard on overhead cabonets, but base cabinets nearly always have drawers behind them today.

If applicable, please outline a scenario or example of how you or other users would use this feature and how it would impact or interact with your workflow.

  • …see above.

Please include any images, links, or other references that help outline the proposed feature

Lordy, just build the case, make the drawers to suit, install them and mount the door. Can do it in my head faster than I can set up cut lists etc. Tip, install your drawer slides before you assemble the case.

BTW, I can, and do, make cabinets the “old fashioned” way. I have European hinge drill jigs, as well as drawer slide alignment jigs, and shelf pin jigs.

I have chosen to make these shop cabinets using Cabinetmaker. In so doing I am forced to design the cabinets and either choose doors, and then use the jigs to lay out the drawer slides - OR - design the cabinets for drawers, and then use my European door hinge jig to lay out and drill for the door hinges.

But the fact of the matter is, that despite its current flaws, I like the fact that cabinetmaker drills the shadow holes for the drawer slides. As good as my drawer slide jigs are, this saves a lot of time.

AND - I also like the fact that cabinetmaker can and does drill the holes for the European hinges. As good as my European hinge jigs are, it saves a lot of time having cabinetmaker do this step.

But currently a user must choose which the cabinet maker software will do, either shadow drill for the drawer slides, or drill for the European hinges - but NOT both, and the remainder must be done using jigs.

it is for this reason that I believe that it is a “must” have to allow a user to design a modern cabinet (drawers behind doors).

As previously mentioned, I am a one-man company in a small shop. I will not be doing cabinet making on any scale because it would be nearly impossible for me to be competitive (although I may take on the random custom build - I’ve had offers because of my high level of quality work). As such, cabinetmaker is not for me as a businessman, and so Cabinetmaker was not designed for a user like me in mind. However, I have been using it to design and build the cabinets in my small shop.

I could have made the cabinets in less time doing it the old tried-and-true methods, but I chose to use cabinetmaker #1) to help force me to learn more about Easel, and #2) to help Inventables improve your product.

Thus, the above are just my 2-cents, and while it will not benefit me directly (once my shop cabinets are all complete), I believe that improving the Inventables offerings improves your bottom-line. And I believe that improving your bottom-line allows you to grow and to put more resources toward development which may in fact benefit me directly. In other words. we’re all in this together - for better or worse.
