Easel: My "D" Isn't Hollow

This letter D is part of an imported .svg of text. Easel sees each letter as an individual vector, and also the completely encased “hollow” parts like the inside of D, A, O and so forth are separate vectors. In the attached image are three shots of the D: first with the inner vector selected, then the outer, and finally with the outer vector’s cut setting on “Fill”. I’ve tried different ways to get the inner part to stay unfilled: fooling around with “Bring forward / Send back”, dragging the inner vector aside and setting it back over the filled outer vector, selecting the inner vector afterward and setting it to “Outline-Outer” (can’t even select it). No success. How can I get Easel to dodge around the inner part and leave it uncut?
