Help with formatting

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew how to put text over a carving. I am carving an american flag, and trying to put “We The People” over some of the stripes. I am trying to have the text be an outline. The carved stripes are still going through the outlined text. Does anyone know how to have the middle of the text to stay untouched at surface level.!

I figured it out. I had to overlap the WE THE PEOPLE with another WE THE PEOPLE. One cleared out the pocket and had a cutting depth of 0. The other one Was a cutout on the outside of the shape path. This was the trick.
