So, when positioning the bit before cutting, do you position it at 0 (on the wasteboard) or on top of the material you are cutting? (or does this depend on the software that you are using?

For Easel, you zero it out at the lower left corner of the material, on top of the material.

@WilliamRoberts depends on the CAM software, most of them let you choose your work zero point.
