Make it a Negative

Anybody know a piece of software that will make a picture into a negative.

I’m partial to Gimp: https://www.gimp.org/.

Negative in Illustrator

Color Negatives

  1. Launch Adobe Illustrator. Open a project you have already started and skip to to step 3, or create a new document by pressing “Ctrl-N” on the keyboard.

  2. Click the “File” menu, select “Place” and then navigate to any color image on your computer. Click “OK.”

  3. Click the “Direct Selection Tool” in the Toolbox and drag it across the objects you want to change to negatives. To select all the objects, press “Ctrl-A” on the keyboard.

  4. Click the "Edit’ menu, select “Edit Colors” and click “Invert Colors.” A color negative is created from the selected image.

Black and White Negatives

  1. Click the images or objects you want to transform by dragging the Direct Selection Tool across them.

  2. Click the “Edit” menu, select “Edit Colors” and click “Convert to Grayscale.” The objects are transformed to black and white.

  3. Click the “Edit” menu, select “Edit Colors,” then click “Invert Colors.” The objects become black and white negatives.

Another free option is ImageJ or FIJI. They’re the same program, but FIJI bundles a bunch of plugins and an autoupdater. Both run on Java (just like UGS)

Both are free and open source, as ImageJ was created by the National Institutes of Health as a standard image analysis tool for biosciences.

To create a negative, open the image and then select Edit->Invert. If you want to convert from RGB to grayscale first, select Image->Type->8-bit or 16-bit.

(if you don’t have illustrator or inkscape, covered in answers above ^)

An online photo editor can do all you need without installing anything. pixlr seems to do the trick.

  1. open pixlr and upload your photo
  2. go to Adjustment (at the top) and Invert
  3. File → Save will save it back out to your computer

Here is a gif

You could also add my Mother-in-law in the picture… that pretty much makes any picture a negative…

Just sayin’ …
