There are some great 3d stl files I bought and want to use to have detail corners on opposite sides of a panel. What is the most reliable way to simply modify the original into a mirror image?

You can manipulate 3D STL files with a number of free packages.
One of the easier free packages is Microsoft’s 3DBuilder. You should be able to download that from their app store for free and run it on any Windows PC.
