Hi, I am interested in making one of those “Drunk” cutting boards. To check the accuracy of my machine I made two test pieces from scrap wood as per the images.
I was thinking that If I cut the wavy lines out with a 1/8th inch bit the resulting pieces should fit together perfectly. As you see, when all
#1s are put together there are gaps and when the
#1 and
#2 center pieces are switched the gaps get significantly worse. In either case the pieces are not suitable for gluing. Am I missing something?
imagine that you designed a 6 inch radius circle and cut on the line. You would wind up with a small circle that would rattle around inside a slightly larger circle. That is because with a 1/8th inch bit, the outside radius of the inner circle would be 6-1/16 inches and the inside radius of the outer circle would be 6+1/16 inches. Your wavy lines suffer from the same effect. If you truly want to do this, you will need to cut one piece on the left side of your designed line while the other piece you will have to cut on the right side of your design line. This should allow the pieces to fit together exactly.
If you are using a belt driven CNC, be careful about your feeds and speeds because belt stretch may also frustrate your project.
