Paper weights!
Engrave on the back side of a small square. Glue another square over the engraving (weld-on or some other acrylic glue). It should look like the engraving is suspended in the middle.

Way, way back, I remember my grandfather had a guy working for him that used a dremel to carve flowers and vines and such into them, filled the carving with bright paint of various colors, then painted the back blck.
Then set the bottom in a block plastic base with a light in it.
