V bit setting

I had a 60 degree vbit and during setting the depth of cut it wouldn’t give the correct depth that I set when it started carving. I restarted, setting the depth deeper again 1/4" and it barely gave me 1/8" I tried 5/16" depth and same issue. I then changed the bit setting to a 1/16" straight bit and left the v bit in and it cut to the right depth. Any suggestions.

I guess if I wanted a v bit to work properly, I’d do a drawing and find the depth needed for a certain amount of diameter at the top. Then I’d pick a straight bit setting and input the depth I needed for that…which is kind of what it sounds like you have done.

I’ve been having this same problem (only cutting too deep). a dozen carves, constantly reducing the depth of cut, but the results are all the same. I had thought on this and thought on this. I came to the conclusion that easel likely refused to let it go shallower because the original design made it (Easel) think that I wanted a certain ‘thickness’ at the surface, when in fact the important thing to me was depth-of-cut. and having the surface line narrower was fine provided that I get the depth that I want.

IF I am correct on this (yes, I said 'IF" I haven’t a clue if I’m correct), It would be nice if a user could choose to go shallower (or deeper) and if the software has a problem with this, a pop-up window should come up that would alert the user that the software is going to override the wishes of the user, and the user could choose to change the depth of cut, or thickness of the line at the surface…

But barring that, Martin, your simple work-around is -at least to my mine - brilliant. I hadn’t thought of ‘tricking’ easel into doing what I want it to do by ‘lying’ to it and claiming that I’m using a straight bit when in fact I’m using a v-bit.

in fact, I’ll likely make all of my carves with a v-bit in the spindle and a straight bit in easel.

Attention Inventibles programmers: please take note of this conversation. Users shouldn’t have to lie to the software just to get the results that we want.

One issue could be that Easel is stopping the depth because it has reached the width of the piece it is cutting. The deeper it goes, the wider it gets. A single line drawing could be an option.
