Waste board surfacing out the box

So I’m approaching the finish line and almost done with assembling my machine. Before my first carve, do I have to surface the waste board? I want to put the grid in it but wanted to make sure.

It would never hurt to surface a wasteboard, but it should be pretty flat straight out of the box.

You could always measure from the bottom of the spindle to the wasteboard in a grid pattern while manually positioning the spindle in the X & Y plane. Using a set of calipers would be best to get very accurate measurements.
