So, where would a guy check first if this was the case, the corresponding light on the g shield doesn’t light up?

Two possible cause I can think of. First one is loose/incorrect stepper wiring. Second if your G-Shield pins are not all the way pressed to Arduino or any miss pins on connection can cause G shield not to function properly. My suggestion is put flash light on it when you’re inserting G-Shield.
Better to check if your wiring is correct, don’t insert G-Shield. Hold it on your hand and move axis back and forward.
Simple wiring problem to the gshield I should have triple checked. I think I’m good now, if I can manage to run Easel w/out it crashing I can truly test.
