Z axis apparently shifting during cut?

I have an older X-Carve that I’ve recently upgraded including a Z-axis upgrade. I’m having an issue where the Z-axis appears to be changing over the duration of the cut. The easel file is set up correctly and the first element to be cut seems basically correct but with the later elements the z axis appears to shift up vertically about 1/2" so that only the very bottom of the cuts are actually contacting the material. I’m setting z-axis using the z probe and also recently upgraded the motors and waste board.

I’ve looked on the forums but not seen any similar issues? Any thoughts?

Is your z axis mounted too high up?

This would cause lost steps once it hits the physical stop
