DIRESTA Wood Stool

My cat got one too.

Here it is all sanded and sealed. The joints worked fairly well, but in making sure that the corners weren’t too tight I went too big.

My daughter decided it was perfect to use to better reach her play kitchen.

Well I finally finished my machine and got everything calibrated including the stepper motors. I decided for my first cut why not try this stool for the contest. I cut it out Monday and was shocked when I removed the cutouts. I didnt have a single scratch on my spoilboard. I had set the X, Y and Z axis stepper calibration Sunday and Monday I measured the MDF and it was an exact .500 everywhere I measured so I set the depth of cut to .500 and was amazed. The stool came out pretty good for MDF. I put a coat of poly on it tonight and here it is. It still needs a couple coats of poly. I plan on giving it to my daughter for her to use as a plant stand in her apartment.

Thanks Zach for doing this. It helped me learn alot about my machine and how to use it.

I made two remakes. The first was just to use 3/4 inch stock, and I also wanted to make the rings stand proud of the legs. I designed it from scratch just looking at what he did in his easel setup. I also wanted to use a v-bit to carve the logo, because a) it looks better and b) you don’t have to fix that section of the logo where the line is too small.

Once I did the first, I thought I could make it MUCH taller. The second remake is a full 29.5 inches tall, or a real bar stool! It all fits within a 30x30 inch sheet.

Still need some finishing work, but the projects are published. Cheers.

Not sure I’d use such an expensive wood for a stool again; but I couldn’t resist.

Looks great!

Don’t think Zack was expecting such a turn out. I have mine all drawn up and will be cutting it out Saturday morning. I’m still learning how to use Inventor but I drew it all in Inventor and transferred it to Easel. Here’s a quick view of the 3d render (just placed image of the mountain on the sketch instead of figuring out how to actually sketch it on. Much easier to just import it as a svg in Easel. Obviously it won’t have the border around it when it’s actually carved). Hope it turns out that well.

And done! Had to modify it a bit since I have a scrap piece of 5/8" MDF. Didn’t quite get the fit up perfect, but once it’s all glue together no one will be the wiser!

I’m planning on V-Carving my daughters name into the top, maybe epoxy filled and then paint it something fun!

Got the V-Carve done! Turned out great! Probably pushing my machine a bit hard, I couldn’t seem to find out how to get multiple passes in the engraving operation in Fusion 360.

Thanks, @Zach_Kaplan for the motivation for such a fun project.

My wife warned me about making something new for the garage (she mentioned there’s absolutely zero space left or something along those lines…) so my remake was a stool for my one year old son. Thanks @sketch42 for the inspiration, I modified your design slightly to use since I loved it so much.

I designed mine to fit in a standard 1x12" pine board. In the spirit of getting as many to fit from a single piece of wood as possible I stacked them and found I could get three entire stools out of one 10 foot piece. The others are building now, but here’s my finished remake.

The turtle is a hand drawn image that I scanned and imported. Here is the finished stool waiting for my son to wake up tomorrow.

Added my Limbert-style table to the fray! All parts fits within the 1000mm^2 area or 24" x 48" if you want to do two passes. Here’s the file:

I’m going to use that Minwax Wood Hardener (sounds like a Jackie Treehorn movie) since I’d never heard of it until I stumbled across a mention of it on this forum. Hoping it will turn the table into wood-colored plastic. I usually use penetrating epoxy, but that’s rather expensive.

All in all, a great learning curve. From Sketchup to AutoCAD to Inkscape to Easel (this is pretty ridiculous). Made from 3/4" MDF (which is actually 0.75"!) since it’s a prototype to save money. The real ones will be made from quarter-sawn white oak and sold for ONE MILLION DOLLARS! Plus, my son can destroy this (like every other piece of furniture we own) and I won’t get butt-hurt about it.

There was a little persuading necessary to get a tight fit (we engineers call that a press-fit). The “swastika” joint worked really well with band clamps providing sufficient pressure to pull the parts together.

That is awesome! I kind of wished I had waited until you had finished this design before I made mine. This could be a really nice end table or plant stand done in hardwood.

My daughter does really love the stool I made though. She carries it from place to place, playing in her room, helping mommy in the kitchen, washing her hands and brushing her teeth in the bathroom.

I am sort of proud of this one. I liked the stool, and liked the taller one I made for the x-carve bench, but it wasn’t that comfortable. I decided to go back to the drawing board and make a wider one with a captains chair and a swivel. The base uses through mortises and tenons on each section. Seems fairly sturdy and really firms up the stool. Its nearly 18 inches wide at the bottom. This all fits in the 31x31 inch space.

The seat takes another 31x31 inch sheet.

I used this swivel from amazon for $10. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001O0D6SI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I think it turned out to be a nice piece of furniture… Any suggestions on how to finish it? I was thinking just poly it…??

I did this in aspire and chilipeppr, but would be happy to throw it into an easel project if someone else wanted to make one.

Your project is published, but not public.

Do you mind sharing it? (Clicking “Open it Easel” says it is not shared)

My remake isn’t anywhere as fancy as some of the others, but was the first time I used the entire surface of my XCarve. Remake of "DIRESTA Wood Stool " | Inventables
