Tips for Router bits

Anyone using stock router bits to do 3d-roughing?
I have a straight/mortising bit, but I’m worried about it’s ability to plunge.

Bosch 1/4-in Carbide-Tipped Straight Bit Model # 85221MC

Compared to these two… (less worried about these designs… the bottom teeth look like they will reach to the center.

IRWIN Marples 1/4-in Carbide-Tipped Straight Bit Model # 1901013 (19.98)

IRWIN Marples 1/4-in Carbide-Tipped Straight Bit Model # 1901025 (14.95)

Obviously the right design (19.95)
Bosch 1/4-in Carbide-Tipped Downcut Spiral Bit Model # 85903MC

If your bit has mortising listed as a use, it will plunge.

The bit in question

Not good.

They work fine if you are using ramping to enter a cut

You will get much better results if you use a ball nose bit for the roughing pass.

I think you deserve two…

Or three!
