X-Carve in New Zealand

Hi Russel are you able to share where you sourced all your parts from. I’m wanting to get one but can’t to buy the kitset from Inventables.

Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

Hi Paul.

I got my parts from various sellers on AliExpress and Ebay. I also ordered key components directly from Inventables. I recently upgraded my stepper motors and drivers from Stepperonline due to the shaft snapping on one of my original NEMA17 steppers.

I can dig out the exact product links from AliExpress, however some of those vendors have disappeared. I essentially upgraded my original ShapeOko, so I had quite a few parts, like vwheels and M5 hardware. I purchased the wide makerslide, 1000mm 2020/8020 extrusions, and spindle holder from Inventables b/c it was the cheapest option for those parts. I purchased local 18mm MDF wasteboard from Mitre10 and measured and drilled out the M5 inserts.

I used the online x-carve instructions extensively both to shop for the needed parts and to reference for assembly. I made changes where I needed to and upgraded some things as well. I 3D printed a few random parts as well.

I am really pleased with the bigger stepper motors and the DM542Y drivers; such a difference from the NEMA17’s and grblshield I was using before.

Let me know if you need a detailed list of parts I ordered; but it might take some time to put it all together.

Where are you located?

Cheers

Help please when using Easel software is there any code that I need to use for using the Z Probe.
I know about the code for GRBL or is it the same code.

Thanks guys

Hi @PaulWilliams1

When setting up your machine in Easel, you should be able to tell Easel that you have a probe. Once you’ve done that, before any carve (g-code or straight from Easel) it will ask you if you want to use a probe or set work 0 manually. No code you need to add for this to happen in Easel.

Hope that helps.

Hi Jeremy,
Thank you for your quick reply I wasn’t sure about bit I will try it in the morning.

Hi there, im new to this forum and for awhile have been looking to get into CNC woodworking, for little projects as a start but have been unsuccessful in finding someone to help with the ins and outs of getting started but i have heard alot about the X-carve and was surprised to find this forum here in NZ. Eager to connect with anyone willing to share or teach a beginner like myself.

Kind Regards
Fereti

Hello Fereti and welcome to the forum,
What are you having trouble understanding?
The X-Carve is a very user friendly CNC, it comes with just about everything you need to start cutting. You just need a computer and dust collection.
Are you familiar with any design software like InkScape?
Check out Pawpaw’s YouTube channel, he has a lot of good videos using the X-Carve and Easel

Hi Russell,
thank you for the information, i have seen several videos on youtube and i am new to cnc and just want to be able to see the x-carve in person in action and the use of the programme to operate it etc… before i look at purchasing. I live in Auckland so am keen if someone who has an x-carve and is willing to show me it working etc…

Hi Vava,

Where about in NZ are you located? Some may be able to let you come by and have a look and get a feel for it yourself. If you are in Auckland, I am available (when not in lockdown). I have definitely spent a lot of time with mine and have formed methods and opinions on the X-Carve.

Hi Jim

I have finally received my x carve and spare parts to complete the built. I have a question for you. With the Dewalt router do you know if that has to have a step down transformer or will it run on our voltage?

If that’s the DW611,
page 47 of the users manual says “voltage 110/220 VAC” so I would presume that it has an auto switching circuit built in

Hi NZ X-carvers. I see this thread hasn’t be used for a couple of years.
But how are things going?
I’ve just got back knto my project after a long break.

Has the interest dwindled for some reason?
